Domestic Dramas

In Domestic Dramas I explore the potential of pattern to function as metaphor for aspects of domestic life--from intimate issues of body and self, to broader questions of relationship and community.

My images represent moments--brief bobbings to the surface of awareness that accumulate on canvas and paper. They deal obliquely with family and household rhythms--the pattern of daily life--and with things that threaten that pattern. What holds us together? What breaks us apart? A blueprint of schisms--bridged successfully or superficially--may be the most telling pattern of all.

Why pattern? Because it pervades our lives. Pattern forms the foundation for mathematics, science, visual art, literature and music, for human learning and behavior. On a mundane level--from wallpaper to bed sheets, clothing to body tattoos--we express and comfort ourselves through pattern. I love the ordinariness of pattern, and its possibility for transcendence.
